CCAC North sports history was made Jan. 19, 2010, as the first-ever CCAC North Campus Intercollegiate Women's Basketball Team took to the court for their first practice.

The players, led by Coach Chris Visgitis, show enthusiasm and excitement for the opportunity to play basketball and represent their college campus.

Visgitis is optimistic and said the team members are receptive and put forth effort on the court. He shares the team's enthusiasm and has high expectations for them.

"It's a great opportunity for me to build a program from the ground up," Visgitis told the Voice. "Building is a long process, and it takes time. But our goal is to form a competitive, winning team."

Visgitis has been playing and coaching basketball for over 35 years. His history includes playing for two years at Allegheny Campus for Bill Shay, and he knows the benefits of playing intercollegiate sports.

"If you have a competitive nature, it's a great opportunity to play an intercollegiate sport," said Visgitis. "It looks great on your resume. I think it really enhances the whole college experience."

Normally, the team presently would be competing against local junior colleges and the other CCAC campuses. However, the North team will not be participating in this season, which started in October 2009.

Looking forward to October 2010, Visgitis wants to start practices early and get ready for next fall.

"We got into this season late," said Visgitis. "What we're going to do while this season is going on is get prepared for next year so we'll get into that at full throttle."

Visgitis understands training will take dedication and work. He said it will take time to get to the level of other colleges, but he is optimistic that can be achieved.

"We're going to try to be as good as we can be," said Visgitis. "You always go in positive, work as hard as you can and see what comes out."

Students at the West Hills Center, a part of North Campus, are also eligible for the team. Any female students at either location who are interested in playing for the North Women's Basketball Team can contact Athletic Director Chuck Bell at 412-369-3692. All practices are held at the North Campus gym.
